Navigating Life Changes Post-Surgery
Adapting to a new leg. Adapting to everyday pain.
Before the accident, my husband and I finally felt settled, financially ready to start a family after 12 years of marriage. We had been trying for a few months, excited and hopeful.
Then came the accident.
Twelve months of not walking. Endless days of rehabilitation. After regaining some mobility, we started trying again, but my body was still recovering. Walking was a struggle, and Dr. Munroe decided I needed another surgery to improve stability, a hardware adjustment that would put me back on a scooter for months and back in rehab. So, we paused our plans again.
Time started to weigh on me. I was getting older, and the window for starting a family seemed to be closing. After recovering from the third surgery, we tried again and again. As the months passed, I worried I’d missed my opportunity to experience the most magical gift of all.
And then, when I had almost lost all hope...it happened.
I was pregnant.
Despite my leg, I had the best pregnancy. It was 2020, and life around us had slowed to a halt. We decided to wait to find out the baby’s sex, though I secretly wished for a girl. Of course, “a healthy baby is all that matters.”
And then SHE was born.
Healthy. Perfect.
My heart now lived outside my body, and my life would never be the same. My daily pain felt insignificant compared to the light she brought back into my world.
